Nemesis at Alton Towers is one of the UK’s best-loved rollercoasters.

But the famed attraction, which turned 28 in 2022, is soon to be closing down for more than a year.

Fans of Alton Towers will be able to enjoy a host of thrill-inducing rides and rollercoasters at the Staffordshire theme park in the interim, including 14-loop ride The Smiler, vertical drop ride Oblivion, and even a ‘flying’ rollercoaster called Galactica.

But why is Nemesis shutting down, and when will it be open again?

Nemesis is closing down… temporarily, in order to undergo a transformation for a big anniversary.

The popular rollercoaster, located in the park’s Forbidden Valley, will celebrate 30 years in operation throughout 2024 – so now seems a good time to give it a makeover.

We don’t have any details yet about the transformation, but we do know it’ll remain open until November 6, 2022.

Kate McBirnie, Head of Product Excellence at Alton Towers Resort, has said: ‘Nemesis is Europe’s first ever inverted rollercoaster, which has been exciting thrill seekers since 1994.

‘The legendary rollercoaster is loved by thrill seekers across the UK and beyond, and we want to give fans of the ride the opportunity to experience Nemesis in its current form before it closes on November 6.’

Nemesis cost £10 million to make – out of 250 tonnes of steel. It whooshes fans through a range of loops, corkscrews and four turns with inversions at speeds up to 50mph.

When could Nemesis reopen?

Brace yourself, as the Nemesis rollercoaster is set to be up and running once more in 2024.

There’s no exact date just yet, but one will surely be announced closer to the time. Watch this space.
