• A hack for an elevated low ponytail is gaining traction on TikTok.
  • To test the hack, all you need is a small elastic hair tie.
  • Our editor put the viral hack to the test and is sharing her results.

I’m pretty game to test almost any TikTok hack, especially when it comes to hair. I’m always looking for ways to make my hair look fuller, avoid using too much heat and damaging my hair, and elevate the basic looks I wear every single day. I’ve had tons of success testing out TikTok hacks in the past, so when I stumbled across a video where a woman took her low ponytail from drab to fab in under two minutes using just a hair tie, I knew I had to test it out for myself.

When scrolling through the comments, I noticed a few people saying they wanted to see the hack on layered hair or fine hair since the woman in the video had pretty thick hair. Since I have both layered hair and fine hair, I wasn’t sure if it would work for me, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised.

To test the hack, all I needed was a small elastic hair tie, so I grabbed one and set to work. I started by pulling the upper half of my hair into a ponytail and securing it with my hair elastic. From there, I split my ponytail into two sections so there was a hole in between both pieces. I then flipped my pony’s ends into the hole.

The next part is where things get a little tricky, and I had to watch the video a few times to make sure I got it right. I took my thumb and pointer finger and pushed them through the hole in my ponytail with my left hand, and at the same time, I used my right hand to grab the remaining hair that wasn’t secured with an elastic. I then took the piece in my left hand and twisted it to the right, which flipped the hair over. From there, I took the hair in my right hand and handed it to my left fingers, pulling the bottom layer of hair through the hole and settling it over the top layer of hair.

I couldn’t see anything for myself until I grabbed a mirror, but once I did, I was immediately impressed. My hair actually looked longer in this style, and I was genuinely shocked that I had created such a cool look using only a hair tie and my two bare hands. It gave my ponytail an elevated look, and it looked great with my tiny translucent-brown highlights popping through.

Overall, this easy hair hack definitely works on fine hair as well as layered hair, and I think it would look just as cute on thick or curly hair. I’m going to adopt this style whenever I create a low ponytail because I think it gives my hair a chic and put-together look in just a few minutes.
