Whether you’re ready to pack up your swimsuits and sandals just yet, fall is on its way. It’s that time again to book your fall hair appointments and scour the internet for new nail inspiration. If you’re on the hunt for something fresh, we have just the thing: the “midi-flick” haircut trend. It’s the perfect cross between the ever-popular ’90s-supermodel hairstyle and the viral coastal-grandmother aesthetic on TikTok.

The midi flick gets its name from its midlength layers and flicked-up ends. Fans of the fluffy blow-dry hairstyle, which gained popularity earlier this year, will see it as an updated, more modern version of that look. It’s just as bouncy and voluminous but more polished despite its slightly messy look. “The midi flick is ideal for giving life and body to fine to medium hair textures but can be tailored to thicker hair types as well,” Tom Smith, celebrity hairstylist and international color creative director for Evo Hair, tells POPSUGAR. “The collarbone length allows the hair to move and bounce off the support of the shoulder and neck.”

At the salon, Smith says to “ask for a length that sits between the top of your shoulder and the top of your collarbone with soft, face-framing layers that are designed to be worn flipped over to one side for maximum volume and airiness.” A round brush will be your best friend when it comes to styling the midi flick.

“Thanks to the length of the haircut, there’s no need to purposefully flick out the ends – just blow-dry with a round brush in large sections, and as your hair settles on your shoulders, it will naturally flip out, giving bounce and body,” he says. This hairstyle can be worn in a middle or side part, but opting for a side part will add even more drama to the look. “For extra volume on top, blow-dry in a strict middle part first, and then flip the part to one side once dry. This will give maximum root lift and an effortlessly flipped-over vibe.”
