With Halloween parties back in full swing this year, it’s high time to start thinking about whipping up a creative fun costume — and not just another sexy (insert any occupation here) getup either. I’ve missed the clever costumes that people used to come up with, and they don’t require a million bucks or hours and hours of time to make.

Here’s a handful of costume ideas that are by turns creative and cool, sometimes spooky and sometimes even a tad chic. What’s more, most of the following ideas can be put together with fairly basic pieces that either already exist in your closet or are easily found online or at a store nearby.

The costume: Morticia Addams

The pieces: 1) Pretty much any midi or long black dress, preferably v-necked like the Fitted Long-Sleeve Rib-Knit Henley Midi Dress for Women ($44.99 on oldnavy.gap.com); 2) a bright, bright red lipstick; 3) black eyeliner for lining eyes and darkening eyebrows; 4) a long black wig.
